I have to confess, I’ve been … let’s say, underwhelmed, with Sample Society for the past few months. My February Sample Society box had one wow, two major fails, and two mehs. The amount of money I have to put towards beauty stuffs is small, so for me, that adds up to having to say goodbye. But before I cut loose, let’s see what February’s box brought me…
LaRocca SkinCare Hibiscus Cream Cleanser with AHA (full size 120 ml for $36; sample size 7 ml with a value of $2.09) – Meh. I don’t know what to say. It’s a cleanser and it works just fine.
Immunocologie Treatment Creme Venomax (full size 1.7 oz for $275; sample size 0.5 oz with a value of $82.50) – Meh. I added this to my massive pile of skin care samples and I’ve used it once or twice. It’s fine – it’s a face cream and it makes my skin soft.
Oscar Blandi Hair Lift Mousse (full size 6.3 oz for $23; sample size 1 oz with a value of $3.65) – Fail. I am a bit of a mousse newb, even though I grew up in the Heyday of Mousse (the 80’s). So I’m not sure if I used it wrong, but this did NOT work for me. It made my hair super sticky and flat – and I’m pretty sure that it the opposite of what it’s supposed to do.
Exude Lipstick Gloss (full size with a value of $29) – WOW. I have never been, and probably never will be, a lipstick person. I’m a lip balm and gloss kind of girl – I just don’t have the courage (or the lips) for bright, bold color. So I was a little apprehensive when I read that there would be a lipstick in this box. But, this little gem is the best of both worlds: it has a lipstick applicator, but gloss consistency. It’s amazing looking on, and it doesn’t dry out my lips like glosses can be prone to do. This is probably the best thing I’ve ever received in ANY of my Sample Society boxes, so I guess it’s a little ironic that this is my last box.
Maya Water Facial Mist (full size 150 ml $34; sample size 70 ml with a value of $15.84) – Fail. People actually pay over $30 for water??? I’m sorry, I just don’t get it. I researched how to use it (most people recommend lightly spraying your face after you finish doing your makeup) and I don’t know. I guess this kind of thing just isn’t for me. Spraying your face with water seems to defeat the purpose of getting your makeup to look like you want it to, and paying over $30 for it just seems ludicrous to me.
Even though the total value of this box was one of the highest I’ve ever had with any beauty sub – $133.08), I’ve had to part ways with Sample Society. Seeing the sneak peeks and unboxings for March didn’t make me regret it, either. Ultimately, I originally subbed because of my long-time love of Allure (their partner) but that couldn’t sustain me. I’ve had just about as much facial products as I can handle, and the other products they offered never really intrigued me.
